Thailand Diving Seasons: Best Time to Dive Koh Tao, Phuket, Khao Lak, Samui & More

Planning a dive trip to Thailand? Learn the best time to dive Koh Tao, Phuket, Khao Lak, Koh Lipe and Pattaya, plus what to expect in each season.

Season planning cheat sheet

Thailand-wide dive calendar at a glance

Each guide has a slightly different emphasis. Read the context below before booking.

Thailand is one of the few countries where you can dive almost year-round – but each region has its own sweet spot. Monsoon patterns, wind direction and local geography affect how calm the sea is, how clear the water gets, and how many boats are even operating.

This guide keeps things practical: learn when each major region is usually at its best, what conditions to expect, and how to pick the right coast based on the month you're traveling. Use it as a cheat sheet, then double check region and shop pages on Thailand Dive Map for real-time updates.

Best time to dive Thailand (short answer)

If you just want the quick version:

  • November – April: Focus on the Andaman Sea – Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Khao Lak (Similan access) and Koh Lipe.
  • May – October: Focus on the Gulf of Thailand – Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, Koh Samui. Pattaya also stays active as a training hub near Bangkok.
  • Pattaya: Year-round option mainly for weekend training trips and quick dives from Bangkok.

Scroll down for regional breakdowns and a month-by-month cheat sheet.

1. Big picture

Two coasts, two different seasons

For diving, think of Thailand as:

Gulf of Thailand

Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, Koh Samui day-trip bases plus Pattaya’s slightly different wind pattern.

  • March – October is the overall calmer window.
  • April – September often delivers glassy seas and higher visibility.

Andaman Sea

Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Khao Lak (Similan gateway), Koh Lipe and the deep south.

  • November – April is peak: calmer seas, dryer days, smoother crossings.
  • May – October is the southwest monsoon with rolling swell and fewer boats operating.

They don't share the same rainy season. When the Andaman is calm (roughly Nov–Apr) the Gulf can be mixed, and vice versa for Apr–Oct. Planning is as simple as pick your month → choose the coast that's in season → pick an island or base.

2. Regional windows

When each area shines

Gulf focus

Koh Tao & the wider Gulf

Includes Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, Koh Samui day-trip bases and, on a slightly different pattern, Pattaya.

When it's usually best

  • Overall window: March – October
  • Often excellent: April – September with many calm days

Outside that range diving continues, but November – January can be windier and wetter due to the northeast monsoon, bringing choppier seas, occasional cancellations and lower visibility.

Beginner friendly?

Absolutely. Koh Tao's shallow bays, calm sites and instructor community make it a top training hub. Aim for April – September for the smoothest experience; if you visit in December/January, stay flexible and pick shops that communicate clearly about weather and safety.

Central Andaman

Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi & Lanta

These hubs mix day trips to reefs/pinnacles with plenty of course options and holiday infrastructure.

High season

  • November – April

3. Month-by-month cheat sheet

Match your month to the calmer coast

November – April → Focus on the Andaman

  • Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi, Koh Lanta
  • Khao Lak (Similan access)
  • Koh Lipe

May – October → Focus on the Gulf

  • Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, Koh Samui
  • Pattaya stays flexible near Bangkok

Fixed dates? Pick the coast in season. Flexible dates? Choose based on goals: training hub (Koh Tao), holiday mix (Phuket/Krabi/Lanta/Samui), remote feel (Koh Lipe), or city weekends (Pattaya).

4. How Thailand Dive Map helps

Seasonal advice is general. Real conditions shift week to week and shop to shop. Thailand Dive Map keeps you grounded:

  • See Google ratings, review counts and "last updated" timestamps on every shop page.
  • Compare regions, languages, course focus, pricing style and safety badges.
  • Browse beginner, safety or tech guides to match operators with your comfort level.

Simple workflow:

  1. Pick your travel month.
  2. Use this guide to choose the coast/region in season.
  3. Explore Thailand Dive Map region pages, themed guides and shop profiles.
  4. Shortlist shops and message them about current conditions, boat schedules and availability.

That way you align season, destination and dive center with your goals instead of chasing generic "best of" lists.

Thailand diving seasons FAQ

When is the best time to dive in Thailand?

Short answer: November–April for the Andaman Sea, May–October for the Gulf of Thailand. Pick your travel month, then choose the coast that’s in season before narrowing down to an island or base.

Can you dive in Thailand during rainy season?

Often yes, but expect more swell, occasional cancellations and changing visibility. The key is choosing the right coast for that time of year and booking with operators who communicate clearly about weather and safety.

Where is best to dive in Thailand in August?

In August, the Gulf of Thailand is usually the safer bet, especially Koh Tao and nearby islands, while the Andaman side is in the middle of the southwest monsoon.

Where is best to dive in Thailand in December?

In December, focus on the Andaman Sea – Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi, Koh Lanta, Khao Lak (for Similan access) and Koh Lipe are all in their main diving season.

Is Thailand good for beginner divers?

Yes. Training hubs like Koh Tao and major Andaman bases such as Phuket and Khao Lak have shallow training sites, strong instructor communities and year-round course options when you match the right season.

  • Calmer seas, less torrential rain, better visibility
  • Great for OW/AOW courses and fun diving with friends
  • Monsoon trade-offs

May – October is the southwest monsoon. Boats still run, but wind, waves and rain can force cancellations or reroutes and visibility swings after storms. Beginners should book with transparent operators and follow crew guidance on seasickness and safety calls.

    Similan access

    Khao Lak & Similan access

Khao Lak is the gateway for Similan day trips and short liveaboards.

    Season window

    • Park open: roughly mid-Oct to mid-May
    • Peak visibility/activity: Nov – Mar
    • Closed season: the national park shuts during heavier monsoon months

If the park is closed, there are no legitimate Similan trips. Aim for Nov – Apr and keep buffer days for wind early/late in the season. Traveling in July/Aug? Switch plans to the Gulf or other activities.

    Deep south

Koh Lipe & the deep south

Koh Lipe brings colourful reefs, Tarutao National Park scenery and a smaller-island vibe.

    Prime window

Prime season is November – April (settled weather, smoother crossings, more operators). May – October is doable but expect choppier crossings, reduced schedules and a higher chance of cancellations—avoid if you dislike rough seas.

    East coast city

    Pattaya & nearby areas

Pattaya is a year-round urban dive hub with wrecks and training sites minutes from Bangkok.

Visibility varies with wind/runoff, but it's perfect for weekend trips, focused training blocks (OW, AOW, Rescue, specialties) and divers who prioritize logistics over postcard beaches.
